Daily SchedulePike Lake Education Center has two different start times. Your child is in the "Late Start" section.
"Late Start" Hours: 9:05-3:45 Breakfast is available for all "late start" students at 8:45. The daily schedule includes opportunities for students to engage in whole group, small group and some one on one learning. For young learners, it is essential to provide hands on learning experiences throughout their school day.
Literacy During literacy instruction, students will participate in a mini-lesson followed by either Reader's Workshop or small group activities. During Reader's Workshop, students either practice working independently or with a partner on the skill focused on during the mini lesson. During small groups, students rotate through several literacy based activities including guided reading with the teacher, word work, sight word practice, listening to reading, tablets, and/or smart board literacy focused games. We also use a program called Heggerty that helps students build phonemic awareness skills (rhyming, sounding out words, substitution of sounds, etc). We also have Writer's Workshop which helps students connect storytelling to written communication. In kindergarten, we begin by telling stories with our words focusing on order of events (beginning, middle and end). Soon we draw pictures and add letters to parts of our story. Eventually, students are able to write complete sentences and in many cases several pages to tell about a single event or story. Math Math instruction begins with a number talk to help increase number sense or the ability to conceptualize numbers (recognize different representations of a number through ten frames, tallies, dot patterns, number racks, etc). After the number talk, students are actively engaged in a mini-lesson focused on specific skill and then an activity that allows students to practice the skill. Students also participate in math stations which allow them to work in small groups to play math games, guided math with teacher, computer math games and smart board math activities. Social Skills Social and emotional learning are integrated into daily interactions and problem solving situations. We practice identifying feelings and develop strategies to successfully interact and communicate wants and needs with others. Second Step lessons encourage discussions about managing strong emotions and problem solving during difficult situations. Technology We have a smart board in our classroom that provides opportunities for interactive learning. Additionally, students have access to learning activities on tablets. These devices are used to support learning in the classroom. Specialists Students will participate in a 5-day rotation where they will attend Music, P.E., Art, Social Studies and Science classes. |
